Worried about skin cancer?

DO YOU HAVE SEVERE CRAMPING AND PAIN THAT
accompanies your menstrual cycle? Is it making it difficult to
enjoy everyday activities? You are not alone!
Michelle Courville of Vancouver was going through
this exact thing every month. Like many other women,
her life was disrupted each month by this intense pain.
Over the months, the cramps grew worse, as did the
bleeding and clotting.
“I had cramps for several days each month, using a
heating pad and prescription pain medication to dull the
pain,” Courville says. “It was that bad.”
For specialty care, she was referred to Colleen Fox,
MD, an OB-GYN at PeaceHealth Medical Group. After
discussing the different options for treatment,
Courville decided on a partial hysterectomy
to remove her uterus.
“I couldn’t bear going another month with the
pain I was in,” Courville says.
Because of the size of her uterus, it was
impossible to remove it vaginally, so she and Dr. Fox
ultimately settled on a robotic approach for the surgery.
Robotic-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive
technique that uses robotic arms to perform the surgery
and provides a magnified 3-D perspective for the surgeon.
Often, the robotic arms are able to maneuver better than
traditional laparoscopic instruments. Benefits for the
patient include minimal pain and a speedy recovery.
After the procedure—in which Courville’s uterus,
fallopian tubes, and cervix were removed—she
healed quickly but was encouraged to take it
easy for six weeks.
Now that she has completely healed, Courville is
grateful to be without cramping, pain and bleeding.
“I feel good,” she says. “My life has gone back to normal.”
